Gawker Opens Up Comments
Been wondering when this day would arrive and it seems that it is today. Gawker Media has opened up comments on some of its sites and its implementation is a really unique idea and one that I personally love.
To post a comment on either Gawker, Gizmodo or Lifehacker you must have an account and the only way to setup an account is through an invite. They have setup a FAQ explaining how to get an invite.
Really, if you think about it this system is genius. It all goes back to Gina Trapani’s article on weblog comments at Lifehacker. On the surface it clears out the basic comment spam issue, but on a deeper level it helps to weed out those commentors who simply comment just to comment. Now it won’t get rid of all of them, but it will get rid of a lot of them and should make for more interesting discussions.
Ever tried to read a discussion at Engadget? Sure they have 159 comments on entry, but 167 of them are useless (yeah you do the math). That’s why I love the potential of this system.
Now this type of system won’t work on every blog, but it definitely does for sites that have such a large and established base as the Gawker Media sites. Glad to see one of the big two innovating and even more glad to see that I am one of the first people to receive an invite.

I was actually against that idea at first (like I had any sort of say) but after thinking on it, I think it’s the best way to go with sites like Lifehacker.

That is an awesome way to manage comments on bigger/more popular blogs. Also helps foster the “community” which some major blogs via the networks have been accused of lacking. Big kudos!
