Google AdSense/Firefox Affiliate Program
Last week Google made it easier for webmasters to retrieve links to their Adsense/Firefox referral programs. Each of these programs are easy to setup and are well worth the short time and effort it takes to get them up and running on your site.
Adsense
The program pays you $100 whenever someone signs up under your account and earns their first $100. Seeing how it is getting easier and easier to reach $100 with Adsense you might be thinking that this is pretty easy money to make. However, you have to take into consideration two things.
- Lots of webmasters already have an Adsense account.
- After they make their first $100 you no longer make anything.
Now neither of these facts should deter because there will always be new people signing up to Adsense and hopefully you can convince them to signup through you. And since the affiliate program is setup alongside your normal Adsense account it’s basically hassle-free.
Firefox
For U.S. publishers Google is willing to pay $1 for every first time user that installs from your site. Just like the Adsense affiliate program this is another simple program to setup, but also has the same caveats as the Adsense with regards to the number of people already using Firefox. However, just like Adsense this shouldn’t deter you from placing links across your sites promoting the program considering it is also for a good cause.
This program can go on any site since it is for a general purpose (web browsing), but I think the Adsense program would only work best on sites that cater to webmasters. This is merely speculation though and testing is the only way to confirm or deny this. In any case, I like the fact Google has done both of these programs and wish they had set them up sooner, but there probably wasn’t a need with no other competition out there. God bless Yahoo.

They really should hide the “Download Firefox” ad from Firefox users!

Yes, I saw this email too. However I did not go back through and read both Google’s and Yahoo’s policies. I see that you are running these ads with YPN, but did you actually check to see if this was acceptable?

The conflict rests with using both contextual ad programs on the same page which I do not do.

The number of people already using firefox is around 10%. That still leaves 90%. Most of those users are running IE on Windows so there is potential but maybe not beyond the web development industry and probably isn’t worth it on a blog such as this. Depends on you stats and how many new readers you bring in that are still using IE.

Since the program is easy to setup though it really isn’t a hassle to get it up on your blog so even if I am getting only $5/yr from this site from the program I see it as worth it because it is minimal in appearance, time to setup and effort.

I always wondered why Google had not established a referral program in the past… I can only assume it has been brought up from the backburner, if it was there at all, now that the arena has become more directly competitve with Adsense.

Finally Google is offering an affiliate program for sign-ups. Is the market already saturated? I guess there are always new publishers… anyway, here is an adsense site you might find interesting …

What I don’t understand is why the Firefox referral programme is only for US publishers. Given that everything else to do with Adsense is available in the UK (they’ll even pay you in sterling via bank transfer) and there’s nothing to stop you downloading Firefox over here, why on earth can’t non-US publishers participate? I’m sure there must be a reason but I can’t find it on Google’s web site, nor can I think of one off the top of my head.

Adsense is an great way to make some extra cash, however, to really make big money you need lots of free traffic and low or high paying keyword Ads, or low cost traffic PPC traffic, and high paying keywords.
