Automattic Stats…A Real Solution?
This week Automattic announced that the stats program, already employed on Wordpress.com blogs, would be made available on all wordpress blogs provided you install a simple plugin. I have used my fair share of stats programs, most notable and Performancing Metrics with varying success, although I still use them both on my major projects. The problems are many when it comes to stats and integrating them into your routine can be a pain and this is where the Automattic Stats plugin was looking to fill in. Here’s part of what the program is about from its plugin page:
“There are hundreds of plugins and services which can provide statistics about your visitors. However I found that even though something like Google Analytics provides an incredible depth of information, it can be overwhelming and doesn’t really highlight what’s most interesting to me as a writer. That’s why Automattic created its own stats system, to focus on just the most popular metrics a blogger wants to track and provide them in a clear and concise interface.”
Although the plugin is sure to fulfil its goal of bare bone stats that work easily with Wordpress, reports I’ve read think that it is simply too bare bones to provide anything that is too meaningful. I have yet to test it out myself (it is on my to-do list) but in the meantime I have a few questions for readers. What were your impressions of this plugin if you’ve installed it and what stats programs do you currently use and how easy (or difficult) was the install? I look forward to hearing your responses.

I’m from GoStats. We have wordpress plug-in specficially for blogs: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gostats-for-wordpress/
(you may find GoStats to be easier to use and also more feature-packed as it is a mature system)

I use it - it’s certainly more useful than not having it - and very simple to install and use. However, the brand new Google Analytics facelift means that Automattic Stats has been a little overshadowed. The architecture means, of course, that it can be updated and added to without bothering the users - which is a huge bonus. Good idea, bad timing…

I was actually browsing Wordpress Plugins today and on just one site came up with upwards of 20 plugins I haven’t used before so I am planning on using them in some way on the site, probably as a weekly review or something.
