Step 2: Expand
For a better understanding of this post it’s best to read what Eoghann is going through first.
Pro Bloggers. To be honest I never even heard of this phrase until Darren Rowse introduced it to me. I had just been creating sites to make money and have fun, but happened to be using blogging software, so I guess you could label me as a Pro Blogger as well. I know that I have had more than one person come up with the notion that they should go my route and create some blogs and begin making some money, just because they read about my success. Others get this idea when they place Adsense on their site and begin to make a little bit of money.
Once the money bug hits, you begin to think of other ways to make money and the logical next step is to simply create more sites. I know I went through that and ended up with more than I could chew. In the end I brought on more authors and put some blogs off for a while until I got my balance back and I am finally able to get back into stride.
The problem though when you add new sites is that you probably haven’t reached the peak of your current site. If you ever visit the WebmasterWorld forums (highly, highly, recommended) then you will see that to make $100/day, people usually give two forms of advice.
- Create a site that make $100/day.
- Create a 100 sites that make $1/day.
The opinions differ on this, but to me I think it would be easiest to create one site (and manage it) then it would be to create a 100. When it comes to this professional blogging thing, I can view any site and basically create new ways for you to make money that go beyond just placing Adsense on your site. Hopefully, given the time I will be able to share those ideas (and implement them on some of my sites). Till then just think of what you can do with valuable content and focus on creating it for your site.
Adding more sites to your money portfolio means that you are taking away time to manage whatever sites you currently have. Just something you have to keep in mind.
Or you could take Darren’s advice and add more authors.

First, nice work on the redesign. It’s a welcome change from the floating centre column.
The whole concept of making money from a blog is just making my head spin. I’m trying to think of an old world parallel, but there isn’t one, is there?

Umm, maybe selling books on your own? I don’t know. I never did anything in the old world :-P

Old world parallel could be singing or organ-grinding on a street corner with a hat in front. If you’re popular, enough people will drop by, and some percentage of those people will give you tips.
