Techniques To Help You Blend Work and Play

by kris on May 21st, 2007

Working online, despite many claims by TV commercials and other scams, does take time. This can be especially true in the summer when the allure of BBQs, swimming, sporting events, and just about everything else looks way more fun than doing your work. Despite your best attempts at avoiding work all together or putting it off until later, it has to be done sometime. Here’s a list of techniques you can employ to balance and blend work and play making both much more manageable:

  • In the summer preposting (using WordPress) can be one of the best techniques you can use. Preposting allows you to write posts hours or days ahead of time and have them appear on your site at a time and date of your choosing. Currently I do nearly all of my posts (including this one) ahead of time, choosing to have them go live at the same time every morning. To put this technique into action write your post in WordPress like you always do but instead of immediately publishing the post select “Post Timestamp” in from the collapsables listed on the right side. Check “Edit Timestamp” then enter the date and time you want the post to go live on the homepage of your site.
  • Mobile web is another great way to essentially work while out of the virtual office. The best ways to utilize this are not to necessarily to work but the keep your emails and chats with clients and partners at bay. Most cell phone carriers offer very cheap mobile web packages which will allow you to access email and chat clients from your phone. This can be good for day-to-day work but is even better at managing your virtual office while you’re away for extended periods of time (think vacations).
  • MoBlogging is a technique of actually writing blog posts from your mobile device. If you’re on Google’s Blogger platform then simply visit mobile.google.com and there will be a link to publish to blogger. WordPress bloggers have two different options. Most simply you can set up a dedicated email address to send blog posts to. This technique is supported by WordPress without any additional installs. A how to can be found here.If you are looking for a different way to blog form your mobile device check out this plugin from Andy Moore which not only makes your site available on mobile devices but also allows you to post from your phone as well.

Those are my techniques for blending work and play: What do you use to get work done efficiently and still leaving enough time to enjoy yourself in the summer (or winter) months?
