Popularity contest?

by admin on January 16th, 2006

Edit: I’ve been proven wrong. The Blog Herald is selling for 72k.

The problogging market I think is at its peak. There seems to be more people starting blogs about blogs than blogs themselves (whoa what a pickle). Talking about blogs must be the most popular niche and I mean why not. Blogs are certainly something to rave about - changing the way content is delivered online is a big step in the media world, but is there money to be made on the topic?

Short answer, not really.

Darren the problogger himself has mentioned multiple times that his problogger site doesn’t bring in any serious amount of revenue. So why do people blog about blogs? Give advice to bloggers? Help bloggers earn money from their blogs?

My best bet is reputation?!? To be known in the blogosphear? Is this a popularity contest?!? We all know who Darren, Scrivs, Cowboy, Duncan and Nick Wilson are. They all run a blog of some sort about blogs. I know what you’re thinking, err Jamsi - your posting on a blog that posts about blogs. Well yes sir I am and because I enjoy it. Call it a passion … I only hope my fellow probloggers feel the same.

Note: The word “blog” appears 19 times in this post, is that a record?

Jamsi, you gotta realize that in the big scheme of things, nobody knows who we are, who the BlogMedia folks are, who you are, what 9rules is, what Fine Fools is, any of that. People barely know Denton and Calacanis, and they’re millionaires in our industry. One of the things the 9rules guys and I have been focusing on as of late is moving our company from the small pond to the “big pond” of the real world so to speak. Once we make that switch then we’re gravy lol.

    Hi Mike,

I was more refering to the blogging world. Yes I’m aware the big media corps wouldn’t have a clue, but if the adverage joe types in google “Make money from your blog” .. well .. you guys show up :)

Think Darren just thought it might be cool to share what he had learned, don’t think there is an adgenda behind it.

Tom: Not to be cynical or anything, but I’d say any blog anyone starts requires quite some work and effort. With that said, I think there could be motivations for starting a blog about blogs or problogging: referral revenue from newbies starting out for example, reputation (as Jamsi noted). The latter can be of certain use in some cases: See this.

It’s not like any of the networks are Google and offering their employees stock options so why should we expect the writers to believe that we will guide them to fame and money if we haven’t at least proved that we can do it ourselves? That is the one thing b5 has over many of the other networks. I am sure many of the writers believe in Darren and believe that he can take them to the level that he is at. That will only last so long though (I do believe Jeremy Wright has said many times that in the future they are going to move away from the scaled payment structure).

    Just my 2 cents.

No way. It’s just like any other economic venture. It’s going to continue to grow. It will wax and wane periodically, but it’s going to continue to grow overall.

Ha ha! This post was so great! As I was walking to my car today I had the EXACT same thoughts… trippy… But I agree wholeheartedly - sometimes a blog is nothing more than a Myspace profile and we try and increase our “friends” or “blogroll” in order to build links, and therefore our reputation.
