The $100,000 Banner

by Paul on September 26th, 2005

By now I am sure the majority of you have seen the Million Dollar Homepage ($143,000 earned as of this writing), which is quickly turning out to be the most genius type of revenue generation that we have seen this year. Not to my surprise there are already clones surfacing such as the the Million Penny Homepage ($2629.00 earned as of this writing) and the $100,000 Banner.

Is it wise to follow this model? Currently I have to say yes because the idea is still fresh and many people seem to be quick on getting a spot. Also when you are talking about paying $100 (minimum) for at least 5 years of adspace and a link you are looking at a bargain and don’t know of many companies that wouldn’t take someone up on that offer.

The biggest problem though is that you will have to start doing it on established websites as the novelty of linking to these clones has faded and once the idea has been saturated you will have to come up with newer ideas or simply stick to the proven models of old. But it’s this kind of innovation that shows me we still have a long, long way to go before we flesh out every revenue generating idea for the web.

Hi there scrivis. It’s nice to see you writing about me. I just wanted to mention that you make a good point about the novelty aspect of this advertising model. That is why I believe the $100,000 banner to be superior to the million dollar homepage. I provide real content that attracts visitors without any gimmick. So, I think this might turn out to be economically viable for the advertisers. On the other page, how much will their money be worth when, six months from now, no one will visit anymore?
