TLA Reveals Feedvertising

by admin on September 27th, 2006

So I stumbled upon something the other day, a new link in my Text-Link-Ad control panel called . Curious and armed with the knowledge that TLA was about to release a new goodie as per my interview (click ), I proceeded with glee.

It was then that I received an email from Patrick informing me that I had been invited to participate in the Feedvertising beta program!

To sum it up, Feedvertising allows you to monetize your rss feeds with sponsored or marketed advertisements, perfect for us bloggers.

You may choose to sell ads spots on our RSS marketplace, use our plugin for person use to place your own ads in your feed, or a combination of both.

Text-Link-Ads (TLA) actually give you the ability to throw in your OWN link ads. Interesting. The ads are simple and appear below your blog post in your RSS feed. An example can be seen on , in which you will see “Sponsored by: blah blah” beneath each post.

Pro’s

  • Ability to sell your own RSS ads
  • Ability to use TLA’s marketplace to sell ads (Handy for those of us that are lazy..)
  • Easy to use RSS plugin
  • Supports many publishing formats such as wordpress, postnuke, mambo, XOOPS, movable type, vbulletin etc.

Con’s

  • All our blogs use 1.5 (a patched version ..) because that’s how we like it. WP 2.0 didn’t impress me and as of now, TLA’s wordpress plugin only works with version 2.0.
  • You now need to install a plugin to display ads and while relatively easy to install, it’s a little more time consuming than the old method.

There’s an issue which comes to mind that was asked in my interview with TLA president Patrick, regarding people buying links for SEO rather than for advertising purposes. If somebody buys an RSS text-link advertisement, they won’t really be buying a solid “back link”, meaning little (if any) search engine optimization benefit.

    yeah it’s an interesting one.

    A couple of comments:

    1. using WP1.5 - arent you concerned about security? Have heard of quite a few people getting hacked recently through old version of WP.

    2. on the backlink funtion - from what I’ve heard it actually is quite good for backlinks because many people republish feeds, including the ads in them. While some of us as bloggers try to stop people republishing our feeds in full there are many who don’t (too lazy, don’t know it’s happening, don’t care) and the advertiser’s link gets published along with the feed. I doubt TLA will publicise this but it’s what I’m hearing that has been found from RSS advertising.

    Dazza,

Security, na. I’ve been pretty careful, however I may have to upgrade all our visual connect blogs to 2.0 soon, to take advantage of feedvertiser if Patrick doesn’t get a move on!

I’m a big fan of TLA, but I too am skeptical about feedvertising. After checking my stats, I noticed that my feeds receive significantly more hits than actual my pages do (albeit probaby spiders and bots). Long story short, this means that feed ad would receive more views than a normal text ad would. I guess time will tell.
